Health Insurance
TopCover & Medical Insurance
You have protected your income if you are sick or injured. But what about your health care?
All pilots should consider these three important factors:
- Medical Termination. If your airline terminates you because of an illness or injury, you will immediately lose access to your company medical benefits – just when you need them the most.
- Contract end. If you leave your airline for any reason and seek a new job, you may find a significant change in your medical benefits.
- Retire. When you retire, how do you access medical insurance for the first time? How do you avoid pre-existing conditions being excluded, long waiting periods before cover is place and high age related premiums?
TopCover income protection benefits are designed to support your income and may not be enough to also cover the cost of medical treatment. Cancer treatment costs for example can easily exceed US$100,000 a year.
The answer is:
Portable Lifetime Medical Insurance.
There are many different providers of medical insurance. Not all of them are suitable for international, expatriate pilots.
In the same way you selected TopCover, you need to select the best policy for your specific needs. We have now teamed with Now Health International to provide a world-class policy that can offer you:
- Global cover and Global portability
- Best in class protection
- On line support and paper free claims administration
Most pilots have some sort of medical cover provided by the employer. But it may be far from adequate if you are seriously ill. One serious illness like a cancer treatment may exceed the airline’s cover and limit your access to the best possible treatment provider. Or you may face the entire cost if your employment is terminated.
We believe that all pilots should consider having an essential level of cover for very serious illnesses that require hospital treatment or prolonged therapy.
The ‘Essential’ policy provides very high annual levels of cover (US3m +) for all in-patient treatments and full cover for cancer treatments. In other words – serious medical conditions are thoroughly covered and treatment can be obtained anywhere, giving you access to the best possible care.
There is no need to pay high premiums when you are employed and have some cover from your airline, Premiums are adjusted for you as you move from airline to airline, allowing you to ‘deduct’ the cover to match that which the employer provides. Premiums are therefore very manageable when your employer provides some cover and enable you to join the plan when you are still fit to fly and enjoying good health.
Many new pilot contracts provide minimum health cover. Even though airline contracts might offer very high salaries, international medical insurance is often poor or not provided at all. In these circumstances you can choose to upgrade your cover and / or lower the ‘deductible’ part of the policy to meet your needs.
Spouse and children can also be insured, and need not be living in the same country as the pilot.
